Associate Leader/Pastor Godfirst Church Cheltenham Role Description

Job Purpose:

The objective of the Associate Leader is to work alongside Howard Kellett, the Senior Leader and the Godfirst elders to bring leadership to the upfront, strategic, pastoral, and operational functions of Godfirst Church Cheltenham.

The Church:

Godfirst is a gospel centred, disciple-making, mission focused, and spirit empowered church. Godfirst is led by a team of elders working through teams of men and women with strengths in preaching, strategy, discipleship and finance.  The church is currently around 120 adults and children with around 100 attending each Sunday. The church was planted in 2010-11 by Howard and Naomi and a small launch team and is currently part of the Advance movement of churches that emerged out of the Newfrontiers family of churches. 

Role Description:

The role is a full time salaried staff position.  You will be working with our senior leader Howard Kellett who has twenty years experience planting and leading churches.

The Associate Leader will have a broad range of gifts, theologically strong with developing leadership and upfront gifts, strong on strategy and operations, an outgoing person with good pastoral / people skills. The shape of the Associate Leader role will ultimately depend on the gift mix of the post holder, with scope for initiating new areas of work within the church particularly those that take us into mission or social justice.

The Associate Leader must have a vibrant Christian faith, with the biblical holiness and character appropriate for whole church leadership. As such it is a genuine occupational requirement that the Associate Leader be a Christian. The Associate Leader will possess the relational chemistry to work well with the elders, staff, and members of Godfirst, and the leadership competency to add significant capacity to Godfirst. 

The following areas may provide some context:

Upfront leadership: The Associate Leader will have a developed or clearly emerging gift in preaching or worship leading. This upfront leadership will need to be underpinned by theological strength. Leadership is a people intensive activity so an outgoing and warm personality and the ability to relate well to all types of people within and beyond the church are vital. The Associate Leader will need to be able to lead or grow into leading Sunday meetings and become confident leading in various team settings.

Pastoral and Missional: The role involves working with volunteers and therefore involves the intentional building of relational links across the church community. Pastoral care and discipleship at Godfirst happens as we share life together in our Godfirst Communities (G1Cs), some experience of ‘gospel’/‘missional’ communities would be helpful though not essential. The ability to work alongside and potentially lead our G1C leaders will be a key part of the role of the Associate Leader. Godfirst has a broad demographic but is predominantly twenties and thirties so the ability and energy to relate well to and disciple students and twenty to thirty somethings would be a huge plus. Godfirst aims to be a missional church so the desire and ability to build relationships and communicate the gospel with people beyond the church is a vital attribute in all who take leadership amongst us.

Staff & Operations: A small staff team of four supports the operations of the church.  Howard Kellett the Senior Leader is full time, plus three other staff working a day or half a day a week, covering Kids Church, Finances, Communications and Integration. The ability to organise, plan, implement, and build teams of volunteers is an essential skill set of anyone in church leadership and as such is a vital skill set of the Associate Leader. A good level of competency with basic IT software will be expected. The Associate Leader must be hands on, carry operational responsibility, take initiative and make things happen. The smooth running of Sunday meetings and assisting the Senior Leader in overseeing our Sunday production, musicians, children, welcome teams will require a strong work ethic. The Associate Leader must have a good grasp of operational systems and able to lead the staff team, when the Senior Leader is away for short or longer periods.


Package: The Associate Leader will be paid on a salary range of £23k - £30K with the possibility of more commensurate with experience. The role carries standard pension and holiday entitlement. The post is permanent, initially twelve months, subject to a successful six-month and first year appraisal.

Hours: Church leadership is not a 9-5 office based activity with evening and weekend work the common pattern. The expectation is that full time staff will work 12 -14 mornings, afternoons and evenings out of a 21-session week. Sunday and evening work means that full time staff have an agreed day off in the middle of week.

There is no closing date for applications, as this post will remain open until we are confident that we have appointed the right person for this role. This could be as early as Easter 2017 and ideally we would like the Associate Leader to be in post by September 2017 at the latest.

Suitable applicants will be invited to visit Godfirst and meet with Howard informally. More formal interviews and presentations with key leaders will then follow, with more opportunities to get to know each other.  The process may involve speaking on Sunday mornings as appropriate. The role will be subject to the standard DBS checks in line with our Safeguarding Policy.
