Lent Wisdom 40 Challenge

Lent Wisdom 40 Challenge

(This is post is adapted from https://www.brettmccracken.com/blog/2021/2/9/the-wisdom40-challenge)

Brett McCracken’s new book  The Wisdom Pyramid: Feeding Your Soul in a Post-Truth World unpacks the need for a spiritual health diet for the soul, guidance on what to eat and not eat, and in what proportions.

The Wisdom Pyramid encourages us to feed ourselves more on the foundational levels and moderate our digital intake, spending less time on your devices so you can spend more time with healthier sources of knowledge.

The Wisdom Pyramid contains six categories/levels. Below are two or three suggested activities for each category. Over a span of 40 days, try to check off at least one or maybe two of the three options in each category.

Print out this page and circle the activities you’ve completed to keep track of your progress. Bonus points if you can complete all three in each category!

  1. Read your bible, at least one chapter a day. (If you’re reading with us we’ve got 13 days left in Paul’s letters. We’ll send out a new plan for 1st) Spend five minutes in prayer after your daily reading, asking God to grant you wisdom. Text your Three your thoughts.
  2. Pick one passage from Scripture to memorize. Practice daily to help commit it to memory (perhaps following this method). Some passages to consider memorizing are Psalm 1, Psalm 23, Psalm 46, Isaiah 53, Colossians 1:15-20, Ephesians 1:3-14, Philippians 2:1-11, Revelation 21:1-8, Romans 8, Romans 12, Matthew 5.
  3. If you have kids, read a Bible story to them each day.

  1. Attend Godfirst church’s worship gathering every Sunday (whatever that looks like right now, virtual or in-person).
  2. Text someone from Godfirst every week and ask how you can pray for them. Then pray for them!
  3. Send your pastor or Godfirst Community leader a note of appreciation, thanking them for how they’ve led and served in such a difficult year.

  1. Go on a daily walk outside, even for just 15 minutes (if that’s all you can spare), and go totally unplugged. Leave your phone, headphones, and other electronics at home.
  2. Share with your Three or your Godfirst Community a photo from nature that you take over the next 40 days. Tag it with a line about what nature teaches you about God.
  3. Plant something indoors or outdoors. Enjoy watching it grow and change through lent.

  1. Make a list of the 3 books (other than the Bible) that have most shaped your faith and consider why. You could share your list with your Godfirst Community.
  2. Read a Christian book – perhaps one that was recommended by your group (Howa
  3. Read an uplifting or thought-provoking fiction book, not on your phone!

  1. Send someone a card or a message letting them know you’re grateful for them and think they’re great.
  2. Buy and send/deliver some flowers or something you’ve baked to someone who could do with them right now.
  3. Go for a walk with someone you haven’t seen for a while.

Internet and Social Media

  1. Take at least one day per week to be completely free of all social media. Enjoy your extra time!
  2. Try and limit your phone / ipad / laptop / screen time each week by reducing unthinking phone pick-ups and turn off unnecessary notifications.
  3. Share a great worship song you’ve been enjoying on Spotify or YouTube with someone from your Godfirst Community.
