Letter to Alex Chalk

Dear Alex,

Thank you for your hard work for the people of Cheltenham.

I am writing to you to ask you to vote against the amendment New Clause 55 (NC 55) to The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, if it is selected and put to a vote on Monday 5th July.

This amendment would introduce an extreme abortion law into Britain. The intention of this amendment is to decriminalise abortion up to birth, and as a result it will abolish the last remaining legal protection for pre-born babies.

Raising the upper time limit for abortions from 24 weeks to birth, will open the door to abortion on demand, for any reason, up to birth and remove all remaining legal protections for pre-born babies. Most people believe that pre-born babies have value and importance which increases as they grow, which should be recognised in the law. Under NC 55 the intention is clearly that they will have no rights or protections at all until the moment they are born. The implications of that are hugely disturbing.

If anything, the law should be updated on the basis of modern definitions of viability, and the upper limit should come down again to 22 weeks, not go to full term.

The clause NC 55 would mean that doctors who conscientiously object to abortion, will lose the conscience protection they currently enjoy under the Abortion Act, certainly until 24 weeks gestation.

Thank you for your personal consideration of these matters, which are of concern to myself, Godfirst Church Cheltenham members and the large number Christians in our town.
